Tighter criteria for teachers’ intake

SUNGAI PETANI: The intake criteria for teachers has been tightened effective this year with only the best candidates selected in an effort to enhance the quality and integrity of the teaching profession, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said.

He said the candidates would be chosen from those who showed high resilience and commitment to the profession.

He told this to reporters at a motivation programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students, organised by Sungai Petani Puteri Umno, here yesterday.

Mohd Puad said the ministry would send 1,878 people for the Post Graduate Teaching Course (KPLI) and 5,292 people for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia Leavers Teaching Course (KPLSM) this year.

The candidates would comprise 50 per cent men and 50 per cent women, 40 per cent from the peninsular and 30 per cent each from Sabah and Sarawak, he added.

He said the ministry would conduct open interview to select the candidates adding that an interview would be held in Nabawan this Monday.

On his proposal for teachers to obtain licence to teach, Mohd Puad said the matter needed in-depth study.
